Terms
Terms of Service
Last updated
These terms are the agreement between you and APTO Study for using the APTO Study website and app. They cover your account, subscriptions and billing, the slides you upload, and what you and we are each responsible for. Please read them with our Privacy Policy.
1.Agreeing to these terms
APTO Study is run by Joseph Abraham (“APTO Study”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account, signing in, or using APTO Study, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use APTO Study.
2.Who can use APTO Study
You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. If you are under 18, you may use APTO Study only with the permission of a parent or guardian, who agrees to these terms for you and must approve any purchase.
3.Your account
- Give accurate information, and keep your password and sign-in secure. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
- An account is for one person. Don't share it or sell access to it.
- Tell us straight away at our support email (coming soon) if you think someone else has used your account.
4.Plans, trials and billing
APTO Study has a Free plan and two paid subscriptions: Pro ($3.99 a month or $39.99 a year) and APTO ($7.99 a month, $29.99 every 4 months (the APTO Semester), or $79.99 a year). What each plan includes, and its monthly limits, are shown on the pricing page and in Settings. Prices and renewal terms are shown at checkout before you pay, and those shown at checkout apply to your purchase. Prices are in US dollars, and any tax that applies is shown at checkout.
- Automatic renewal. A paid subscription renews automatically at the end of each period you chose (a month, 4 months for the APTO Semester, or a year), and the price of the plan you chose is charged to your payment method at the start of each new period, until you cancel.
- Free trial. The free trial is for APTO only, and lasts 7 days. There is one free trial per person: we check your account, your email address (Gmail addresses count as the same address with or without dots or a “+” tag), the browser or device you use, and your payment card. If any of them has already been used for a free trial, you don't get another one. You give a payment method when you start the trial. Your APTO subscription then starts automatically when the trial ends and you are charged $7.99 a month, unless you cancel before the trial ends. Settings shows the date your trial converts. You can have one subscription at a time, so while a trial is running, plan changes and cancelling are done from Manage plan & billing in Settings.
- If your card was already used for a trial, we don't start a trial, we cancel the trial straight away, and you are not charged anything for it. We tell you so in the app, and you can choose to subscribe to APTO without a trial ($7.99 a month, charged when you subscribe) or pick another plan.
- Payments are processed by Stripe. We don't see or store your card number. If a payment fails, Stripe may retry it, and paid features may stop until the payment succeeds.
- Price changes. We may change prices. We will tell you at least 30 days before a new price applies to your subscription, and you can cancel before it does.
- Plan limits (decks, slides, questions and so on) reset each billing period. Unused allowance does not carry over.
5.Cancelling and refunds
You can cancel at any time from Settings (Manage plan & billing), including during a free trial. Cancelling during a trial means you are not charged. Cancelling a paid plan stops the next renewal. You keep full access to your paid plan until the end of the period you have already paid for, and then your account moves to the Free plan. Your decks and notes stay in your account.
We don't offer refunds, including for partly used periods, unless the law where you live requires one. The 7-day APTO trial is the way to try APTO Study before paying.
6.Referral program
You can invite friends to APTO Study with your personal 5-character code, found in Settings under Invite friends. A friend enters it at checkout, before their first payment. Invited friends get the same APTO Study as everyone else; the rewards below are for you, the person who invites.
- Who counts. A friend counts when they use your code (or an invite link that carries it) on a new APTO Study account before its first paid subscription. Existing paying accounts can't be referred. You can't refer yourself, including with a second account, another address that delivers to the same inbox, or by paying for a friend's plan with your own card.
- The qualifying payment. You earn a reward about two weeks (14 days) after your friend's first successful payment for a paid plan, as long as that payment has not been refunded or disputed and, when we check (about 14 days after that payment), your friend has not cancelled their subscription or set it to cancel. Signing up, or starting a free trial, does not count on its own. A trial counts once it turns into a paid subscription and the first payment goes through. If the payment method can't be checked (for example, some non-card methods), the reward may be withheld.
- The reward. When 3 of your friends qualify, you get 1 free month. It repeats: 6 friends earn 2 months, 9 earn 3, with no limit on how many. Free months stack: each one starts after the ones you already have. If you have a paid subscription, or a trial with a payment method, you get a credit worth one month of your plan (on an annual plan, one twelfth of the yearly price; on the APTO Semester, one quarter of its price), or what your three friends paid for a month between them if that is less (a friend's annual payment counts as one twelfth, a Semester payment as one quarter). So a free month can be worth less than a full month of your plan. It is applied automatically to your next bill. If you are on a free trial and have not paid yet, your credits wait until your first payment and expire if the trial ends without one. Otherwise you get 30 days of Pro in the app. Free time in the app pauses while you pay for a plan that already includes it, and continues when that plan ends.
- Reversals. If a friend's payment is refunded (fully or partly), charged back, or credited after their reward was given, we reverse that reward: we take back the part of the credit you have not used yet, or the free time you have not used yet. If a reversal leaves you with fewer qualified friends than a free month you were given needs (fewer than 3 for your first month, 6 for your second, and so on), the most recent month is taken back the same way. A month is given once for each group of 3 qualified friends, never twice.
- No cash value. Rewards can't be exchanged for money, transferred or sold. An unused credit is not refunded if you cancel.
- Fair use. Share your link only with people who would want it, and don't spam. We check each qualifying payment (for example, for the same email inbox or the same card), and we may withhold or reverse a reward that comes from self-referral, fake or duplicate accounts, spam, or anything else that breaks these terms.
- Changes. We may change or end the referral program at any time. Rewards you have already received stay yours, except as described under Reversals and Fair use.
7.Your slides and notes
You keep ownership of the slides and files you upload and of what you write in APTO Study. We don't claim any ownership of them.
To run the service, you give us a limited permission to store your uploads, extract their text and images, build notes, flashcards, answers to your questions and practice questions from them, and show the results to you and to anyone you share a link with. We use this permission only to provide APTO Study to you. We don't publish your content, sell it, or use it to train AI models. The permission ends when you delete the content or your account. Copies in our backups are deleted on the schedule in the Privacy Policy, so they can remain for a short time after you delete something.
Only upload material you are allowed to use. Lecture slides usually belong to your instructor or school. Uploading them for your own private study may be allowed, but it is your responsibility to follow your course's and school's rules, including academic-integrity rules. Don't use share links to publish material you don't have the right to share.
If you believe content on APTO Study infringes your copyright, email our support email (coming soon) with the details, and we will review it and remove it where appropriate.
8.Acceptable use
Don't:
- break the law, or upload content that is unlawful, harmful, or that you don't have the right to upload;
- upload malware, or try to break, probe, overload or get around APTO Study's security or plan limits;
- scrape, copy or resell APTO Study, its knowledge base or other users' content, or use automated tools to access it;
- use APTO Study to harass anyone, or to cheat in a way your school prohibits.
9.Study content and accuracy
Your notes are built from your own slides, and on some plans are checked against APTO Study's knowledge base. We work hard to make them accurate, but they can contain mistakes, and your slides themselves may contain errors we can't detect. Always check important material against your course materials and your instructor. APTO Study is a study aid. It does not replace your classes, and we can't promise any grade or result.
10.Our content and open sources
The APTO Study app, its design, its brand and its knowledge base belong to us. While you have an account, you may use them for your own personal, non-commercial study. Notes and exports made from your slides are yours to keep and use for your own study.
Parts of our knowledge base are checked against openly licensed works, such as OpenStax textbooks under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. Those works are credited, with their licences, on our Attributions page, and their own licences continue to apply to them. None of those sources endorses APTO Study.
11.Changes and availability
We are always improving APTO Study, so features may change, and we may add or remove them. We aim to keep APTO Study available, but we can't promise it will always be available or free of errors. If we make a change that takes away a main feature of your paid plan, you can cancel.
12.Ending your use
You can stop using APTO Study at any time. You can delete your account yourself in Settings, under Account (see the Privacy Policy). Deleting your account immediately cancels any paid subscription or trial, with no proration and no refund for the rest of the period you paid for, unless the law where you live requires one. It also erases your uploads and the notes and other study material made from them. Stripe, our payment provider, keeps its billing records as the law requires. Removing files can take a short time, and copies in backups are deleted on the schedule in the Privacy Policy. We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, or where the law requires it. Where we reasonably can, we will tell you first.
13.Disclaimers
To the extent the law allows, APTO Study is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, including warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. Some places don't allow these exclusions, so some may not apply to you.
14.Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost data, lost grades or lost opportunities, and our total liability to you for any claim about APTO Study is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited, or your rights as a consumer under the law where you live.
15.Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the place where the operator is based (details coming soon). Disputes will be resolved by the courts or process we will name here (details coming soon). If you have a problem, please contact us first at our support email (coming soon), and we will try to sort it out informally.
16.Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. We will change the “Last updated” date at the top, and for significant changes we will tell you in the app or by email before they take effect. If you keep using APTO Study after a change takes effect, the new terms apply. If you don't agree, you can cancel and stop using APTO Study.
